Tuning of Standard Software
For tuning of standard software applications have been chosen, which were used frequently at DKRZ, RRZ, and TUHH RZ, or are of interest for a wide range of users, respectively. Account was taken of the fact that best practices can also be derived from the examples. The set-up for benchmarking was based on representative input data in the sense of realistic use cases. In tuning of standard software it is not a matter of implementing better parallel algorithms, but rather to analyze the potential of high level tuning of an application from "outside" by selecting particularly efficient libraries and by using a suitable combination of compiler and OpenMP/MPI environment, for example. The vital role play compiler and MPI settings and to exploit the potential of the specific cluster environment, e.g. by providing information relating to job placement and process pinning.
